Vinyl, turned-edge, entrapment, and poly

Four constructions cover almost every custom binder anyone asks us to build. They are not four grades of the same thing — they are four different manufacturing processes, and the one you want is decided by your artwork and by where the book is going to live. Pick the construction first. Ring size, color, and pockets are easy after that.

Vinyl

A rigid vinyl sheet is heat-sealed over board, edge to edge, leaving a visible seal line around the perimeter. Stock cover colors, two inside pockets standard. This is the workhorse binder.

Decoration is one-color screen print or one-location foil stamp, and it wants vector art — native Illustrator or .eps, one solid spot color, no gradients, no drop shadows. A screen and a die get made once and stay on file, which makes reorders cheap and fast.

Vinyl is wipeable, chemical-tolerant, and survives hard handling. It lives on sales desks, in training rooms, and in any account that reorders the same book every year. It is the wrong choice the moment your cover is a photograph or your logo has more than one color in it — a screen print is one ink, and faking a second color means a second screen, a second pass, and a price that no longer looks like a vinyl binder.

Turned-edge (casemade)

A full-color litho or digital sheet is laminated, wrapped around board, and turned over the edges so the perimeter is finished with no seal line showing. It is built the way a hardcover book is built, and it looks like it.

Decoration is a full-bleed four-color wrap — front, spine, and back are all your artwork, in gloss or matte laminate, with foil available on top of the wrap. The wrap sheet is larger than the board in both directions: plan on roughly 3/4” of turn-over on every side plus 1/8” bleed beyond that, and request the turned-edge template for your ring size before you build the file — details on the artwork specs page.

This is the best-looking binder we make, and on the published ladder it undercuts vinyl at every tier — $11.75 against $12.75 at 100 pieces. It belongs on presentation work, closing sets, and anything a customer keeps on a shelf. For books that live in hard handling, vinyl’s wipeable sealed surface is the safer choice.

Entrapment

A four-color printed sheet is heat-sealed under clear vinyl over a colored vinyl base — the artwork is entrapped between the two, which is where the name comes from. Structurally it is a vinyl binder; visually it carries full-color imagery.

The reason to specify entrapment over turned-edge is variable copy. Because the insert is a printed sheet and not a wrap bonded to board, we can change what that sheet says from cover to cover — a different region, product line, rep name, or version — inside one production run. Nothing else here does that without a new setup per variation.

It keeps the toughness of a sealed vinyl binder. It is the wrong choice when you want the finished, no-seal-line perimeter of a casemade book, or when the run is one static design — turned-edge looks better for less money.

Poly

Extruded polypropylene, formed and screen printed in one color. Light, flexible, water-resistant, and the least expensive binder we build.

Decoration is one-color screen print only. Poly does not take foil, and printed color is limited to solid vector shapes. Do not send a photograph.

Poly goes where binders get destroyed: field manuals, safety data sheets, jobsite documentation, anything riding in a truck for two years. It is the wrong choice for presentation work. A poly binder reads as a tool, not a document, and no amount of good artwork changes that.

Prices are per piece at 100, 1” round ring, letter size. Entrapment and poly are marked call-to-confirm: those numbers are current but have not cleared final cost review, so we confirm them in writing before production.
